7th of July 1980 The Austrian Times Newspaper Man Survives One Of The Most Dangerous Border Crossings In The World: Yesterday, a man was found in Austria, who has told the press he came from Czechoslovakia. All we know is his name is Jozef. That is all he said to protect his family.
It is a miracle he survived! The Iron Curtain is very dangerous, men protect the border from all areas and guard dogs are present. There are armed guards who carry guns. A journey like this has to be planned out.
Not many have ever survived as many drown in the river. Jozef was travelling with his two friends both close to him and they both drowned. His dog Bessie helped him to stay afloat. It was not any easy journey and there were many times when he was struggling for life.
When asked why he attempted such a dangerous feat his reply was simple, "for freedom".
He claims he is going to stay in Austria until he is able to find a place to live but will never find another home country to replace his. He speaks a little German and has lost everything he owns: no money, no clothes, including his beloved Dog Bessie who has been put in quarantine and at this stage he cannot afford her. He has lost his country, his friends and his family. He must venture alone in hope of finding a meaning to freedom.
